Culture Change Best Practices:
Holistic Advances
Nursing homes that are moving away from a traditional medical model of care
in favor of a social model have also investigated incorporating holistic eldercare
advances into their environments.
Recent advances include:
- Aromatherapy
- Massage
therapy
- Sensory stimulation rooms
Each of these areas of holistic interest
has been met with success in nursing homes around the country. The
Institute for Caregiver Education has led many of these initiatives, and
we are
currently involved in outcome measurement projects to determine their
success.
There are many benefits as a result of holistic eldercare initiatives.
These
include:
- Fostering well-being without medication
- Building strong bonds
between caregiver and
resident
- Reduction in weight loss, pain, agitated behaviors,
sleeplessness and falls
- Increased
resident and staff satisfaction
